Series background & context
The Holmes books begin in New Orleans and stay rooted there, even as the cast grows beyond the original trio of brothers. At first the focus is on Elijah, Tobias, and Alexander Holmes, men with very different jobs and personalities, but the real through-line is the family around them. Parents, cousins, siblings, old friends, and future in-laws all keep this world feeling busy, affectionate, and very lived in.
The early books, starting with Deliver Me, have that classic family-series appeal. A doctor who agrees to fake date a colleague. A former basketball star trying to rebuild his life after injury. A single father who has been hurt before and is not eager to try again. From there, the series opens out. Later books bring in more members of the Holmes circle and shift into reunion cruises, city politics, troubled marriages, career reinventions, and second chances that have been years in the making.
This is a family series as much as a romance series.
What ties it together is the way Rochon handles closeness. The Holmes clan can be loving, nosy, supportive, frustrating, and funny, often all in the same scene. The books do not depend on one long suspense plot or a single mystery. Instead, the pull comes from watching different people in the same orbit fall in love, make mistakes, and slowly learn how to trust one another.
New Orleans matters here, too. The city gives the series its rhythm, from hospital halls and neighborhood ties to schools, construction projects, and city hall maneuvering. Even when a book takes characters somewhere else for a stretch, the emotional center stays with home, family, and the people who know your history whether you want them to or not.
If you like contemporary romance with a broad ensemble cast, recurring relatives, and a warm sense of place, the Holmes books have a lot to offer. They work best in order, starting with Deliver Me, but each romance still has its own complete emotional arc. Think family banter, grown-up problems, and love stories that feel connected to a larger world instead of floating on their own.
