Hellequin Chronicles: Novellas and Short Stories: Collection 1

by Steve McHugh

2025

Series background & context

The Hellequin Chronicles is the spine of Steve McHugh’s shared universe, and it all starts with a man who doesn’t remember who he is.

In Crimes Against Magic, Nathan Garrett wakes up on a warehouse floor in modern-day London with no past, a gun, a sword, and a single scrap of paper with his name on it. Over the years he discovers he’s a powerful sorcerer and reinvents himself as a thief for hire, keeping his head down while quietly hunting the people who stole his memories. That uneasy life collapses when a job goes bad and a teenage girl becomes a target, forcing Nate to choose between the safe life he’s built and the bloody history he can’t quite recall.

As the series unfolds, readers learn that Nate is far older and more dangerous than he looks. For centuries he was Hellequin, Merlin’s personal assassin, the shadow behind legends of a relentless, masked hunter. Walking away from that role left scars on him and on the many gods, monsters, and mages who crossed his path. Each book peels back more of that history, mixing present‑day plots with extended flashbacks to places like fifteenth‑century France, nineteenth‑century Montana, and war‑torn Europe.

McHugh’s world assumes that the gods of myth are real, but recasts many of them as sorcerers, elementals, or other supernatural heavyweights. Everything is loosely governed by Avalon, a power structure with Merlin at the top and rival realms like Shadow Falls jostling for influence. Nate’s work and loyalties pull him through this tangled politics, from werewolf packs in the south of England to Olympian prisons, Norse realms, and beyond.

For all the magic and violence, the books keep coming back to relationships. Nate’s circle includes people like his werewolf best friend Tommy Carpenter and on‑again, off‑again allies such as Mordred, who shifts over time from bitter enemy to uneasy comrade. The series leans into found family, old grudges, and the hard work of trying to be better when your past is full of very bad choices.

The main arc runs through seven novels, from Crimes Against Magic to Scorched Shadows, which closes out Nate’s first major war. Along the way, novellas like Infamous Reign, Frozen Rage, Hunted, Undying, and The King of Avalon, plus the stories collected in Hellequin Chronicles: Novellas and Short Stories: Collection 1, fill in key episodes from earlier centuries and side characters’ lives.

The Hellequin Chronicles also set up much of what follows. Events here ripple directly into the Avalon Chronicles and The Rebellion Chronicles, making Nate’s story the best place to start if you want the full sweep of McHugh’s myth‑heavy, action‑driven universe.
