Series background & context
The Rebellion Chronicles picks up after the chaos of the Hellequin and Avalon books and asks what happens when the long‑simmering fight against Avalon finally turns into open war.
The trilogy begins with Sorcery Reborn. After the events that shattered Asgard and the wider realms, Nate Garrett has lost his magic and is hiding in the small town of Clockwork, Oregon. The rest of the world—and many of his enemies—believes he’s dead. While he’s trying to adjust to a fragile, human life, Avalon’s forces arrive with a new plan that threatens both the town and the people who took him in, forcing Nate back into the conflict with nothing but his wits and a stubborn refusal to let innocents die.
From there, the scale widens. Death Unleashed sends Nate racing to cure a venom that has poisoned his father and best friend, even as Avalon moves against Asgard. Layla Cassidy, fresh from the Avalon Chronicles, travels to Valhalla to win the support of the Valkyries and finds herself in the middle of another uprising. Mordred hunts for Excalibur, a weapon that could tip the balance of power, but the quest forces him to confront who he’s become.
By Horsemen’s War, the rebellion is in full swing. Arthur, now the ruthless leader of Avalon, brings the fight directly to the Earth realms, and key battles erupt in places like Washington, DC. Nate, Layla, Mordred, and a wide cast of allies and former enemies have to coordinate across realms and pantheons to stop Avalon from burning everything down.
Tonally, these books push McHugh’s action instincts to the edge: siege warfare, desperate last stands, and the sense that any major character might not make it to the end. At the same time, the story keeps space for smaller moments—family decisions, old friendships repaired or broken, and the cost of carrying centuries of violence.
The Rebellion Chronicles is best read after the Hellequin Chronicles and the Avalon Chronicles, because it relies on emotional payoffs and long‑running grudges built there. Together, the three series form one big arc following Nate’s journey from amnesiac thief to key figure in a sprawling, multi‑realm war and finally to whatever kind of future a man like that can carve out.
If you’ve finished Hellequin and Avalon and want to see how the long fight against Avalon ends, this is where McHugh ties the threads together and lets the characters face the consequences of everything that came before.
