The Good Girl Exception

by Maren Moore

2026

Maisie's one reckless night comes back to haunt her when the stranger she cannot forget turns out to be Wilder Hawthorne, the new hockey coach at her university. He is older, off-limits, and determined to keep his distance, until he cannot.

Series background & context

Hellcats Hockey takes Maren Moore's love of sports romance and pushes it into a more forbidden, more reckless college setting. These books are tied to the Orleans University world, but they center the hockey side of campus, where reputation matters, rumors spread fast, and one bad decision can follow you everywhere. The mood is still flirty and fast-moving, but there is a sharper edge here than in some of her lighter series.

The first book, The Bad Boy Rule, sets the tone well. Saint Devereaux is the kind of player everyone already thinks they understand before he opens his mouth. Lennon Rousseau looks like the opposite, polished, careful, and very much the kind of good girl who should know better than to get tangled up with him. That gap between image and reality drives the book. What begins as a setup colored by revenge and attraction turns into a much messier romance once both of them start seeing the person under the performance.

These books love rules mostly so they can break them.

That becomes even clearer in The Good Girl Exception. Wilder Hawthorne arrives with public baggage, private damage, and a new job coaching at Orleans University after getting kicked out of the NHL. Maisie Delacroix is younger, sunny, and very much off-limits. Their story keeps the series rooted in hockey, but it widens the emotional range. Now the conflict is not only about chemistry. It is about image repair, age gaps, work boundaries, and what happens when two people meet at exactly the wrong time and still cannot stay away.

The common thread through the series is the Hellcats program itself. Hockey is the pressure cooker. It shapes schedules, friendships, status on campus, and how much trouble a rumor can cause. Around that, Moore builds romances where the tension usually comes from contrast: bad boy and good girl, grump and sunshine, revenge and softness, public scandal and private vulnerability. Even when the setups are heightened, the emotional stakes stay simple and readable. These characters are trying to protect themselves, and then someone inconvenient comes along.

Expect books that are steamy, dramatic, and built on strong push-pull chemistry. The campus setting keeps everything close. Characters run into each other at the rink, at parties, at work, and through mutual friends. Nobody gets much room to hide. That gives Hellcats Hockey a nice claustrophobic energy, in the best romance-novel way, because once the feelings start, the characters are forced to deal with them.

If you like college sports romance with sharper banter, off-limits tension, and heroes who need to earn their way back from bad decisions, this is the Maren Moore corner to head for.
