Author bio
Heather Woodhaven writes stories that mix danger, heart, and a little humor. Her books range from romantic suspense to friendship-driven women's fiction, but they tend to share one idea: ordinary people can wind up in very unordinary trouble. That feels natural coming from someone who has earned a pilot's license, taken a hot air balloon ride over Kenya, helped with a medical-laser project on a mission in Haiti, parasailed in the Caribbean, accidentally found herself on a black-diamond ski run in Aspen, and snorkeled with sting rays.
Adventure clearly got to her early.
Before fiction became the center of her work, Woodhaven was doing mostly nonfiction freelance writing. She came up with the idea for The Secret Life of Book Club in 2011, but the manuscript moved slowly at first. In 2013, fellow author Lisa Phillips challenged her to enter a Love Inspired Suspense contest, and that changed the pace of things. She wrote quickly, got rejected, studied the line more closely, rewrote the story, and kept going until she landed her first contract. Her first published novel was Calculated Risk, and The Secret Life of Book Club followed soon after.
That path says a lot about the way she works.
Woodhaven has also said that parts of her lighter fiction come straight out of real life. She taught preschool, she draws on children's antics, and she seems more than willing to laugh at her own embarrassing moments. That shows up on the page. Even in the tense books, there is often a quick human beat, a family moment, or a flash of awkward humor that keeps the story from feeling stiff.
On the suspense side, she likes strong setups. In Surviving the Storm, a murder on the Oregon coast turns into a race against both killers and nature. Undercover Twin opens with a woman discovering she has an FBI agent twin and then having to step into her life. Arctic Witness drops an ex-husband, an ex-wife, a child, a K-9, and a killer into the Alaskan wild. Artful Deception shifts into the world of stolen art, witness protection, and family secrets. The hooks are easy to grasp, and she wastes very little time getting the trouble started.
Her women's fiction takes a different route, but not a different heart.
The Secret Life of Book Club and Christmas with Book Club are built around friendship, marriage, motherhood, and the quiet fear that life has narrowed more than you meant it to. Instead of fugitives and marshals, the tension comes from routines, misunderstandings, personal dreams, and the challenge of living a little more bravely. What readers often seem to like in both lanes is that Woodhaven's characters are not polished superheroes. They are tired parents, careful professionals, exes with history, witnesses in over their heads, and decent people trying to make one good choice at a time.
Across her books, a few patterns keep showing up. She likes second chances. She likes couples who have to work through old hurt while facing immediate danger. She likes stories where family matters, whether that family is biological, chosen, or just starting to form. There is usually a clean romantic thread and a note of faith, but the stories stay focused on action, trust, and the cost of keeping secrets.
Now she describes her life in a way that fits her books pretty well. She spends her days celebrating laughter, collecting embarrassing moments, and living with a household that sounds, by her own telling, like a roomful of aspiring comedians. That playful streak matters. It keeps even the darker stories from taking themselves too seriously.
If you pick up a Heather Woodhaven book, that is probably what you are getting: fast trouble, decent people, a hopeful finish, and just enough wit to make the hard parts easier to breathe through.
