The McGuire Legacy feels like a return to the McGuire world through a slightly different door. Where the earlier McGuire books centered on brothers caught in danger, this series starts with a story that widens the family circle and leans into art crime, witness protection, and buried family pain. This page starts with Artful Deception, so what you get here is the opening move of a spin-off that still carries the McGuire name and its habit of attracting trouble.

The mood is tense from page one.

In Artful Deception, Deputy U.S. Marshal Jackson McGuire is tracking a fugitive linked to stolen art when he is reassigned to protect museum expert Nadine Larkin. Nadine is already carrying too much. Her brother's death does not sit right, dangerous incidents keep happening around her museum, and she is hiding the existence and whereabouts of her baby niece. That setup gives the story two kinds of pressure at once. There is the official case, with law enforcement, art theft, and a killer still moving. Then there is the personal side, where grief, mistrust, and family duty make every decision heavier.

The setting helps the book stand apart from Woodhaven's wilderness and small-town stories. Museums, art collections, and questions about stolen pieces give the danger a more polished surface, but the stakes are still very direct. Nadine is not dealing with abstract crime. She is trying to stay alive, protect a child, and figure out whether Jackson is someone she can trust. Jackson, meanwhile, has the classic McGuire problem of trying to stay professional while the case keeps getting personal.

That mix is probably the best way to understand what this series is aiming for. It keeps the clean romantic suspense rhythm Heather Woodhaven uses elsewhere, but it trades storms and remote hideouts for deception, hidden agendas, and a web of secrets that runs through family life as much as the investigation. The title Artful Deception is a good clue. This is a story about surfaces, false assumptions, and the risk of mistaking protection for control, or distance for safety.

If you have read the earlier McGuire books, this series feels like a familiar family name moving into a fresh corner of the suspense world. If you have not, it still works as a starting point. Either way, expect danger with a personal cost, a hero who has to loosen his grip on certainty, and a heroine who is protecting far more than herself. For now, Artful Deception is the clear place to begin.
