Madeline Montgomery has spent fifty years teaching magic-challenged witches, so losing her job leaves her wondering who she is without it. Jake Cunningham arrives with debts, a bad reputation, and a secret reason for seeking her out, and the book plays that setup for both humor and heart. It is also a nice reminder that this series is not only about young couples and first love. Reasor gives room to reinvention, late-blooming romance, and people who think they already missed their chance.

What links the books is the sense of a hidden supernatural Kentucky where witches and vampires have their own rules, councils, and grudges, but still make very human mistakes. The romances are central, yet each book also has a clear external problem, a stolen artifact, a deadly poison, a curse, a dangerous bargain. If you like paranormal romance that moves quickly, keeps the worldbuilding readable, and lets the couples do a little bickering before the sparks fly, this series is an easy one to sink into.
