What keeps the series moving is the mix of wonder and worry. Dragon's Knob is full of delightful strangeness, but it is also under pressure from protesters outside the gates who threaten the school's academic freedom. Spella is dealing with something more personal too. She feels different, even in a magical world. She has to learn what kind of magic is truly hers, how to trust other people, and how to stay brave when adults are keeping things from her. The books lean hard into friendship, kindness, loyalty, and found family, while still giving younger readers real danger, bullies, villains, and mysteries to solve.

It is whimsical, but the stakes are real.

The series keeps widening after book one. In The Mummy Snatcher Curse, Spella, Tolden, Aunt Cauldroneyes, and Spella's talking mummified cat Egypt head to Mummy City, where a mummy snatcher is carrying people off and old trouble is stirring again. That follow-up makes it clear that The Wand Keepers is not only about a magical school. It is also about a child learning how big her world is, how strange it can be, and how much responsibility comes with her gifts. There is an ongoing shadow in the background too, since the Dragon King may not be gone for good.

If you like cozy fantasy with a mystery engine, this series is an easy one to settle into. Expect playful language, oddball creatures, school adventure, and a heroine who is young enough to be vulnerable but stubborn enough to keep going.
