Series background & context
Haunted Hearts Legacy is Howard's gothic paranormal romance series, built around love stories that are tangled up with ghosts, old houses, and family secrets. It is more adult in tone than her YA fantasies, but it still has the pieces readers may know from her other work: heightened emotion, strange magic, and people who feel trapped by the roles life gave them.
The series begins with The Architect of Song. Juliet Emerline is a deaf young hatmaker whose quiet home is threatened by Lord Nicolas Thornton, an architect with plans for her estate. After Juliet discovers a grave, a strange flower, and the ghost of a man called Hawk, she follows the mystery to Thornton's resort and finds herself caught between a living man with secrets and a spirit who can reach her in a way no one else can.
The books are connected by legacy, not just by romance.
The Hummingbird Heart moves the story forward to the next generation at the Manor of Diversions, the holiday resort born from the first book's ghost story. Willow Antoniette, an Italian orphan raised with the Thornton children, wants a future with Julian Thornton. Julian is focused on engineering plans and the family's resort, until an ocean-liner journey, a mute child, and a haunting pull them into danger together.
The Glass Butterfly widens the family story again. Felicity Lonsdale has built a false life on an isolated Irish estate while raising her nieces and hiding from her past. Nick Thornton arrives carrying guilt of his own, drawn by rumors of transparent butterflies connected to the afterlife. Their bargain gives both of them a reason to look at ghosts they would rather leave alone.
The series has a historical-gothic feel: secluded estates, secret identities, graveyards, flowers, music, letters, inventions, and spirits that will not rest. The supernatural pieces are not just decoration. They force the characters to say what they have buried, and to decide whether love can survive guilt, disability, class pressure, scandal, and grief.
Read these in order if you can. Each book gives a central couple its own mystery, but the emotional weight builds through the Thornton family and the places they leave behind.
