Harriet Whitehorn Books in Order

Harriet Whitehorn grew up in London, the city where she still lives today with her husband and three daughters. Before writing books full-time, she studied at Reading University, the Architectural Association, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and spent years working in building conservation.

Books were part of the picture early on, but becoming an author felt like a distant idea rather than an obvious career.

That changed slowly rather than in one dramatic leap. She kept reading, kept writing, and eventually moved from conservation into children's fiction. She is now a full-time writer, but that earlier life still seems to matter. Her books often have a strong sense of place, whether she is writing about London streets, museums, sea voyages, or imagined islands.

Her first children's novel, Violet and the Pearl of the Orient, arrived in 2014 and introduced Violet Remy-Robinson, a child detective with sharp instincts and a gift for noticing what adults miss. The Violet books, including Violet and the Hidden Treasure, Violet and the Smugglers, Violet and the Mummy Mystery, and Violet and the Mystery of Tiger Island, helped establish her as a writer of lively middle grade mysteries. The series picked up award nominations, including the Waterstones Children's Book Prize and the Sainsbury's Children's Book Award.

Violet likes a clue, and so do Harriet Whitehorn's readers.

Whitehorn did not stay in one lane. With The Company of Eight and The Conspiracy of Magic, she moved into bigger fantasy adventure, following Cass through circus-boat dreams, hidden identities, outlawed magic, and political danger. These books show another side of her writing, more sweeping and more openly fantastical, but still driven by brave young protagonists, quick pacing, and the feeling that curiosity can be as useful as strength.

She also writes for younger readers. In The Great Raspberry Mix-Up and Dancing with Doughnuts, part of the Freddie's Amazing Bakery series, she shifts to shorter chapter books full of baking, community, and gentle mishaps. Freddie Bonbon, his friend Amira, and the small town of Belville give those stories a warmer, cozier feel, but the qualities many readers like in her longer books are still there: humor, movement, kindness, and children who keep going when plans fall apart.

Across her work, some patterns keep returning. She writes clever girls, determined boys, oddball adults, and communities where friendship matters. She also likes strong setups: a stolen jewel, a suspicious boat captain, a missing mummy, a magical conspiracy, a sabotaged cake. The stories are adventurous, but they are also approachable. They invite readers in.

These days, Whitehorn is still based in London and writes full-time. Whether she is sending Violet after a thief, Cass across dangerous waters, or Freddie back into the bakery before a competition, she tends to offer the same promise: a brisk story, a memorable setting, and a young hero worth following.
