In Singapore Sapphire, Harriet Gordon arrives in Singapore in 1910 after tragedy in India and a bruising stretch in the suffragette movement back in England. She is living with her brother Julian, the headmaster of a boys' school, and earning extra money as a shorthand typist when murder pulls her into police work.

These books use colonial Singapore as more than scenery. The docks, barracks, clubs, schools, canals, and drawing rooms all shape what Harriet can see and what others try to hide.
