Author bio

H.Y. Hanna was born in Taiwan and spent much of her childhood in the Middle East, growing up as a third‑culture kid between languages, cities, and school systems. Books were the constant in all that moving, and she was the child who was happiest with her nose in a story.

At school she loved English composition and was the student who turned in twice the word count the teacher asked for. Wanting a “sensible” career, though, she left her early writing dreams to one side and went to university in the United Kingdom. At Oxford University she studied Biological Sciences, then stayed on for a master’s degree in Social Anthropology, getting to know the historic colleges and cobbled streets that would later shape her mysteries.

After graduating, she tried very hard to do what people call a real job. She worked in advertising and marketing, did some modelling, taught English as a foreign language, and even spent time with an educational publisher and in dog training. The variety suited her curiosity, but none of those roles felt like home the way stories did.

As she approached thirty, she realised she did not want to spend the rest of her life in offices and meetings. She shifted toward writing, first as a freelance journalist and short story writer. Her work began winning prizes and placements, which gave her the nudge she needed to focus on fiction full time.

Her first series starred a Great Dane detective and her canine friends in the Big Honey Dog Mysteries for middle grade readers. Those adventures let her combine a love of animals with a taste for puzzles, and they were inspired in part by the real dog she lived with at the time.

Before long she moved into adult fiction, finding her stride with cozy mysteries. The Oxford Tearoom Mysteries follow Gemma Rose, a former high‑flyer who comes home to open a tearoom near Oxford and keeps tripping over bodies between baking scones. The Bewitched by Chocolate series adds magic, chocolate, and a tiny Cotswolds village to the mix, while the English Cottage Garden and Barefoot Sleuth stories draw on her affection for English villages, gardening, and sunny coastal settings.

Alongside the cozies, she has written sweet beach romances set around a veterinary clinic in Australia and a romantic suspense trilogy set in Singapore. Across genres, readers tend to find the same hallmarks in her books: warm humour, twisty plots, animals with big personalities, and settings that feel like places you could step into.

Hanna has lived in many parts of the world, including Dubai, Auckland, London, New Jersey, and New Zealand, before finally settling in Perth, Western Australia. She often jokes that she is a bit mixed up culturally, and that her accent proves it. The upside is that those moves left her with a store of landscapes, accents, and quirks to draw on when she builds fictional worlds.

These days she writes full time in Perth, sharing a home with her husband and a rescue cat named Muesli, who has become the model for more than one fictional feline. When she is not at her desk, she enjoys gardening, adding chilli to almost everything she eats, and chatting with readers about books, travel, and pets.

Her stories invite readers to escape for a while into villages, tearooms, gardens, beaches, and chocolate shops, where the murders are fictional, the animals are endearing, and justice reliably wins out in the end.
