If you want shifters, fae, and a wider shared world: Dog with a Bone → Dead in the Water → Promise the Moon
If you want a newer paranormal mystery with ghosts and family trouble: Fair Market Value → Amber Gambler → Midnight Auto Parts
Author bio
Hailey Edwards came to fantasy early, and she has never really left it. She has written about being shaped by movies like The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, The Last Unicorn, The Hobbit, Flight of the Dragons, and Nausicaa. As a kid, she did not watch those stories from a distance. She wanted to step into them.
She was the kind of child who wanted a sword, a unicorn, and probably a dragon scale too.
That imagination stuck. Then, as she got older, her reading drifted toward crime and mystery. For a while, that seemed to be the lane. What pulled her back was urban fantasy, especially Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning. Edwards has said that book reopened the door. After that, she tore through paranormal romance and urban fantasy, reading widely and fast, and somewhere in that reading rush she started having worlds and characters of her own she could not shake.
So she sat down and started writing.
Her first published novel was Everlong, the opening book in the Daughters of Askara series. From there she kept building. Some of her books lean more toward fantasy romance, some more toward urban fantasy mystery, but they tend to share a few things: dangerous magic, strange family trees, found family, and people who are trying very hard to keep going while the world gets weirder around them.
A lot of readers first meet her through The Beginner's Guide to Necromancy. Those books follow Grier Woolworth, an exiled necromancer in Savannah trying to survive ghosts, old enemies, and the mess her family left behind. Others start with Black Hat, White Witch, where Rue Hollis, a former black witch in hiding, gets dragged back into paranormal investigations. If you want shapechangers and connected-world urban fantasy, Dog with a Bone and Dead in the Water are strong entry points too.
What makes her books easy to stick with is that she likes a lived-in world. A haunted house can feel fussy and loyal at the same time. A witch can be dangerous and funny in the same breath. A case might start with a corpse, a curse, or a missing supernatural, then widen into family trouble, political trouble, and emotional trouble. She also returns often to the idea that the family you choose can matter just as much as the one you were handed.
She writes a lot about magic, but not tidy magic. Her stories are full of bargains, consequences, bad timing, old wounds, and power that always seems to cost a little more than expected. Even so, there is warmth in them. Friends show up. Houses sulk. Side characters steal scenes. People fall in love while monsters are making everything inconvenient.
There is usually at least one terrible plan in motion.
Edwards has described herself as a writer who still loves fantasy as much as she did when she was young, and that sense of play still comes through. Her books can get dark, but they rarely lose their humor. They like sharp banter, messy loyalties, and characters who keep choosing each other.
She has also written, with the same dry wit, about family life and about having a daughter who loves fantasy too. That feels right. Her work comes from someone who never stopped believing those impossible worlds were worth chasing, even after she learned she would have to build them herself.
