The series starts with Phoebe, a young woman in a walled world where monsters roam beyond the safe places and the northern gate that once held them back no longer stays shut. She is not training for glory. She is living a small life until a monster attack reveals the truth.

She is the fated priestess.

From there the trilogy becomes a quest story. Phoebe has to find her four guardians, survive the emperor's Black Army, and reach the gate before the same fate that killed other priestesses catches up with her too. That structure gives the series a classic fantasy-romance feel, with travel, revelations, a widening map, and a growing team. The guardians themselves help shape the mood: the gruff protector, the bard with a sadder heart than he first appears to have, the dragon-linked rogue, and the enemy she should not want but cannot ignore.

What keeps the series interesting is that the official version of the world keeps turning out to be false. The monsters are not exactly monsters. The priestess is not exactly what the authorities claim. The gate, the elders, the emperor, and the history of the realm all start to look different as Phoebe moves farther from home. Foxglove uses that unraveling to shift the trilogy from a simple chosen-one setup into something more political and more dragon-focused.

It is still a romance series, but it is one of her more plot-forward ones. The sex and emotional bonds matter, yet the books also care about travel, military pressure, old lies, and what happens when a holy story has been used as a weapon. The dragons in particular give the series a wider reach, and readers who go on to Kingdoms of Sky and Shadow can feel the shared mythology expanding.

If you want Foxglove with stronger quest energy, more external stakes, and a heroine who has to grow into leadership fast, this is a good place to go. It is a complete trilogy and works best read in order, because every book changes what you think the world is. By the end, the title makes a lot more sense than it does at the start.
