Series background & context

Green River Hearts is Moreno's dark cowboy corner, and it works because it understands that ranch romance can carry suspense just as well as comfort.

These books are set in Wyoming and revolve around women who are not arriving at ranch life because everything is going great. They are running, recovering, grieving, or trying to rebuild. That gives the series emotional weight right away. The men they meet are rugged, yes, but they are not just there to pose against a fence. They are part of the healing, the trouble, or both.

Barbed Wire Hearts sets the tone. A city woman heads west after her carefully planned life falls apart and lands at a ranch that feels safe until it doesn't. Honey Bee Hearts keeps that pattern going with a heroine carrying grief and a ranch full of secrets. Later books push into rodeo territory, music, and other corners of the same shared world, but the basic promise stays steady. Love in Green River does not arrive in a vacuum. It comes with history, fear, and the possibility of violence still catching up.

That is what makes the series darker than a purely cozy western romance line. The settings are open and beautiful, but the stakes are usually personal and immediate. People are hiding from exes, from the past, from trauma, or from the consequences of surviving something terrible. The romances matter because they happen in the middle of that mess, not after it has been cleaned up.

If you want Moreno in a contemporary mode, Green River Hearts is a good place to start. It keeps the heightened emotion of her fantasy work, but trades portals and monsters for ranches, cowboys, and danger that feels a lot closer to home.
