Series background & context

A Gothic Shade of Romance is Karina Halle’s line for lush, spooky retellings with a strong romantic core. The first books under that banner are the Sleepy Hollow duet, Hollow and Legend, and they give a good sense of what the wider shelf is doing, classic gothic material, sharper heat, and a story world where desire and dread are never far apart.

In the Sleepy Hollow books, Katrina Van Tassel is not just a love interest caught between two men. She is at the center of the whole storm. Brom Bones, Ichabod Crane, witchcraft, old family power, and the Headless Horseman all get folded into a darker, more sensual reworking of the legend. The setting around Sleepy Hollow Institute helps too. It gives the books a closed in, secretive feel that suits the story.

What makes the line distinct is that it is not interested in polite gothic distance. These books want shadow, obsession, blood, mystery, and attraction that complicates everything. They keep the eerie bones of old tales, but they also let the characters be messier, more openly desirous, and more trapped by the things they want.

That means the tension usually works on a few levels at once. There is the monster or curse level. There is the secret family or coven level. And then there is the romantic tangle, which is often just as dangerous because nobody is especially good at pretending they are unaffected.

If you come to gothic romance wanting atmosphere first, this shelf delivers. Expect haunted places, old legends, forbidden magic, and relationships that feel hottest right when everything around them is starting to go wrong.
