Series background & context
Goodwill House starts with an old family home in trouble. When war overturns Lady Joanna Harcourt's comfortable life, the house can no longer run as a grand private estate. Instead, it has to become useful. That change is the beating heart of the whole series.
At first Joanna and her daughter Sarah open the house to young women serving the war effort near the local RAF base. Later books bring in land girls, returning friends, new romances, and bigger wartime demands. Goodwill House becomes a place where very different women meet, work, quarrel, heal, and build a kind of improvised family.
Joanna is the figure who gives the series continuity. So does Sarah, who begins with hopes of becoming a doctor, and Lady Elizabeth Harcourt, the formidable older generation presence in the house. Around them, each book spotlights a different young woman, often someone trying to prove herself while also navigating love, class, grief, or fear.
What makes the series appealing is its balance. There is romance in every volume, but there is also plenty about work, rationing, household strain, changing roles, and the simple effort of keeping people fed, housed, and hopeful. As the war moves on, the stakes rise and the house itself keeps changing with it.
This is very much an ensemble saga. Readers who like big houses, recurring characters, and wartime community stories will feel at home here. Start with The War Girls of Goodwill House and go in order if you want the fullest sense of how the house, and the women inside it, evolve.
