The Forgotten Ship Books in Order

The Forgotten Ship begins with a heist and then keeps expanding into something much larger. What starts as one man's hunt for a legendary lost freighter turns into a stranded-galaxy adventure about alien networks, buried history, refugees, shifting alliances, and the stubborn refusal to give up on getting home. It is one of the more openly adventurous things Terry Mixon and J.N. Chaney have written together.

Drake is the series' engine. He steals artifacts on the theory that dangerous treasures should not stay hidden in private vaults forever. That gives him a nice rogue energy from the start. In The Forgotten Ship, he chases a map to a lost royal mega-freighter and quickly discovers that treasure hunting gets more complicated when there are guards, rivals, and a woman with an eyepatch and a vendetta involved. Yukiko becomes essential fast, not just as a complication but as a true co-lead once the series opens up.

Then the floor drops out.

The ancient travel network tied to Those Who Came Before throws Drake and Yukiko to the far side of the galaxy with no easy route home. That one move changes everything. From that point on, the books are not only about the prize they found. They are about survival in an unfamiliar region of space, learning how alien societies work, building a place for humanity, and figuring out whether the ancient builders of all this technology were ever what anyone thought they were.

The mystery side is a big part of the fun. Shadow Relics, Those Who Came Before, and Ghosts in the Machine keep pulling on questions about the network, the vanished civilizations behind it, and the possibility that some of those long-lost powers may not be entirely gone. At the same time, the series does not lose its practical adventure rhythm. People still need ships, supplies, allies, information, and a way to stop enemies like the Authority from taking over whatever hope has just been uncovered.

Atlantis becomes important too.

As the floating city and the Jontihem setting take shape, the books start balancing exploration with settlement and politics. Drake and Yukiko are no longer just trying to survive. They are trying to carve out a future for millions of displaced humans while also navigating alien bureaucracy, hidden factions, and discoveries that could rewrite the history of the region. Later books like The Dark Regent, The Old Masters, and Monuments to the Dead lean even harder into that layered mix of mystery and responsibility.

If you want a series that feels less like straight military campaign fiction and more like spacefaring adventure with old secrets under every floor panel, this is the one. The tone is lighter on its feet than The Last Hunter, but the stakes are still real. Under the treasure maps and alien relics, The Forgotten Ship is really about finding a way home when the universe keeps handing you one more reason why that should be impossible.
