Series background & context

Glimmer Lake sits in Hunter's paranormal women's fiction corner, and it knows exactly what it is. These books are cozy, funny, and a little strange, with three women in midlife discovering that their lives are not over, they are just getting weirder.

The series begins when Robin Brannon, Valerie Costa, and Monica Velasquez survive an accident and wake up with psychic abilities they absolutely did not ask for. Suddenly there are ghosts, visions, strange feelings attached to objects, and clues that suggest their quiet mountain town has been keeping secrets for a long time. Instead of getting one chosen heroine, the series gives you a trio of friends, and that friendship is the emotional backbone of everything.

Each book shifts focus slightly. Suddenly Psychic starts with Robin and the sheer chaos of realizing normal life has left the building. Semi-Psychic Life moves toward Val, whose object-reading ability becomes very inconvenient when her ex-husband disappears. Psychic Dreams centers Monica, whose visions begin pointing toward fire, danger, and a mystery that could hurt the whole town.

What makes the series stand out is its tone. It is not trying to turn midlife into a joke, but it is happy to notice the comedy in aching knees, hot flashes, changing families, and the rude surprise of psychic powers arriving after forty. The books are affectionate about ordinary life, and that makes the magic land better when it shows up.

Glimmer Lake itself feels like a character. It is a mountain town with the usual small-town comforts, local shops, old friendships, gossip, and routines, but there is something sitting underneath it all that will not stay buried. The mysteries are personal enough to care about, yet connected enough that the series keeps building from one book to the next.

If you want paranormal stories that are more about friendship, reinvention, and solving local mysteries than about doom and destiny, Glimmer Lake is a very good fit. It is welcoming, witty, and grounded in the idea that women in the middle of life still get to be the heroes of the story.
