Series background & context
Gang of Ghouls starts with a heroine who has already been through seven brutal years before the real story even begins. Lily is released from psychiatric confinement with a gap in her memory, a town that hates her, and a younger sister who wants nothing to do with her. She is trying to keep her head down. That plan does not last long.
Because the first people waiting for her are the four "imaginary friends" who got her through childhood.
Only they are not imaginary. They are the ghosts of murdered gangsters, now back in a very real and very unstable form. They are crude, violent, obsessive, and completely devoted to Lily. What starts as a strange paranormal reunion quickly becomes a story about buried memories, old crimes, and the kind of loyalty that can turn frightening in a hurry.
The setting matters a lot here. The series stays rooted in a sleepy town full of grudges, rumors, and rotten history, so even the quieter scenes feel tense. Lily is not just dealing with ghosts and powers. She is dealing with a whole community that has already decided who she is. The books keep circling that question of whether she can reclaim her life while the past keeps reaching for her.
There is also a strong supernatural thread running under the crime and revenge plot. Lily begins to uncover powers of her own, and those powers are tangled up with the same secrets that ruined her life. As the series goes on, the scope widens from local menace to something much uglier and more dangerous, but it never loses that offbeat mix of menace, emotion, and dark humor.
That balance is the hook.
If you like paranormal romance that gets a little feral, with possessive ghost men, memory gaps, violent payback, and a heroine who has to piece herself back together while chaos erupts around her, this series knows exactly what it is doing. It is eerie, messy, funny in a warped way, and surprisingly tender underneath all the mayhem.
