Reversal of Fortune

2015

Series background & context

Gabriel Wolfe’s series follows an ex SAS and Parachute Regiment soldier who now works for a covert British unit known only as the Department. Haunted by a botched mission in Mozambique and the death of his friend Mickey “Smudge” Smith, he carries post-traumatic stress into every new operation, even as he keeps volunteering for the most dangerous jobs.

In Trigger Point he is embedded inside the campaign team of a right wing billionaire whose political ambitions conceal plans for an armed coup. Blind Impact finds him recovering from a truck crash in a military hospital, where rumours of sabotaged RAF flights and an upcoming airshow pull him into a race to expose a deadly new drug and rescue kidnapped British women.

The missions only grow more extreme. In Condor a young girl detonates a suicide vest on a London bus and Gabriel’s hunt for the order giver leads to a sadistic cult leader in the Brazilian rainforest and a Colombian cartel boss nicknamed “The Baptist”. First Casualty sends him to southern Africa to recover Smudge’s body, then into a web of blood diamonds, land grabs and arms deals that reaches far beyond one dead soldier.

Later novels broaden his world. In Fury a woman calling herself Erin Ayers frames him for his best friend’s murder and systematically targets everyone he loves. Rattlesnake drags him out of exile in Hong Kong after a five word text about a dead comrade, uncovering a covert plan to test a bioweapon on Cambodian children. The novella Minefield takes him and Mossad agent Eli Schochat back to Cambodia to eliminate a former Khmer Rouge warlord and rescue Eli after a mine blast leaves her captured.

The stakes are often geopolitical. No Further involves a nuclear scientist in Iran, mercenaries, torture chambers and a traitor inside British intelligence. Torpedo throws him between a Colombian cartel, a Chinese triad and the Russian Mafiya. In Three Kingdoms he parachutes into remote western China to topple a renegade colonel who has turned his missile base into a personal kingdom, all while pursuing clues about a sibling snatched from his family as a baby.

That missing sister, Wei Mei, takes centre stage in the spin off Tara Wolfe thriller Purity Kills, which shows her kidnapping by Hong Kong triads, harsh upbringing in rural China and brutal training in a Party run assassin school. Later books like Ivory Nation and Crooked Shadow give Gabriel more personal motives, from tackling ivory poachers tied to political power to hunting the corrupt cop who destroyed his family.

Recent instalments find him trying, and failing, to escape the life. In Brass Vows a firefight in Afghanistan and a fateful betrayal echo forward to his wedding to Eli, where snipers turn their blessing in Jerusalem into a battle. Seven Seconds, Peacemaker and Edged Weapon show a more reflective Gabriel, wrestling with suicidal thoughts, defending a Honduran village from a tech billionaire and tracking a trafficked girl through the backstreets of Paris. The series blends detailed action, global settings and the ongoing question of what constant violence does to a man who still wants to do the right thing.
