Author bio
Andy Maslen was born in Nottingham in the English Midlands, a city better known for Robin Hood than crime fiction. As a boy he was already telling stories, scribbling very short tales about aliens in school exercise books and dreaming up adventures.
Before he ever wrote about special forces operators or detectives, Maslen tried a lot of other jobs. He worked in a record shop, poured pints as a barman, knocked on doors selling DIY products and cooked in an Italian restaurant. Somewhere along the way he even picked up a medal for archery.
After university, where he studied psychology, he moved into the business world and discovered copywriting. Over three decades he wrote marketing campaigns and subscription letters, eventually becoming a marketing director at a business information company. The experience left him with an eye for how organisations really work behind the scenes.
In 1996 he left corporate life to co‑found Sunfish, a specialist writing agency. Through Sunfish he has written for a long list of clients, from charities and arts bodies to large corporations, helping them turn dense reports and complex ideas into clear, readable prose. He also launched an online copywriting academy so other writers could learn the trade.
Alongside client work he built a second career teaching people how to write. His non fiction books, including Write to Sell, The Copywriting Sourcebook and Persuasive Copywriting, have become go to guides for copywriters and marketers. He is a lifetime fellow of a UK institute for direct and digital marketing and has run workshops on persuasive writing for audiences of all sizes.
Crime and thriller writing grew in the gaps. Maslen had always loved fast paced, character driven stories, and eventually he decided to try his own. He wrote the first draft of Trigger Point, the debut Gabriel Wolfe novel, in a short, intense burst, discovering that the habits of planning and revision he had learned in business translated well to fiction.
That book launched a long running action series about ex SAS operator Gabriel Wolfe and, soon after, a parallel set of crime novels. His fictional world now includes vigilante detective Stella Cole, haunted Wiltshire cop Henry Ford and DS Kat Ballantyne, who hunts killers while wrestling with the fallout from her own past. A spin off line of Tara Wolfe thrillers follows Gabriel’s long lost sister from abduction in China to assassin training and beyond.
Across these series Maslen tends to mix tightly researched procedure with big emotions. His stories often circle guilt, revenge, loyalty and the cost of violence, whether he is writing about a Swedish serial killer case, a black ops mission in Africa or a domestic drama that slides into horror. Readers meet soldiers and cops who make mistakes, villains with plausible motives and victims whose lives feel painfully ordinary until the worst happens.
He also writes standalones and short fiction, from the vampire novel Blood Loss to psychological thriller You’re Always With Me, plus horror shorts like Skin and Homebodies. Different genres, same interest in how ordinary people react when the ground suddenly moves under their feet and the rules they lived by stop making sense.
Maslen lives in Wiltshire with his wife, their two sons and a whippet called Merlin. When he is not writing he plays blues guitar, leads a band from time to time and drinks serious amounts of tea. Asked what he does for a living, he is likely to say, simply, that he tells stories.
