Series background & context

The DI Stella Cole novels start as a revenge story and evolve into a long running, cross border crime series. When readers first meet Stella she is a Detective Inspector with London’s Metropolitan Police, married to human rights lawyer Richard and mother to baby Lola. A hit and run that kills her husband and child shatters that life, sending her into a year of pills, booze and barely contained rage.

In Hit and Run she returns to work and secretly reopens the case, discovering that the “accident” was part of a conspiracy involving powerful figures in law and politics. Her need for justice twists into a vigilante mission, and a darker, more ruthless persona that she calls “Other Stella” begins to surface. Hit Back Harder and Hit and Done make up the rest of the Revenge Trilogy, taking Stella from London to Spain, rural Essex, Canada and a frozen Minnesota reservation as she hunts down every member of the group who ordered the deaths of her family.

Later books see her wrestling with what comes after revenge. In Let The Bones Be Charred she is back in official homicide work, hunting a killer who mutilates and strangles prominent Christians, including the glamorous head of an anti abortion charity. The case exposes hypocrisies inside religious and political movements and shows Stella trying, not always successfully, to keep her own violent impulses in check.

Weep Willow, Weep shows her first major case as a newly promoted DI, called out at three in the morning to the killing of a wealthy woman’s husband during a supposed burglary. Under pressure from a boss who wants an easy answer, Stella digs into a tangle of money, marriage and lies, learning how leadership changes the way she has to fight for justice.

From A Beautiful Breed of Evil onward the series relocates Stella to Sweden. Now working as a Kriminalinspektör, she investigates the murder of a former ambassador found in his London flat with his tongue torn out and placed on a Bible, a crime that drags her into dark chapters of Swedish history and a transatlantic tangle involving a skeleton on a Minnesota lake bed. Swedish detectives Oskar Norgrim and Johanna Carlsson, as well as a vengeful colleague from London, become part of her new world.

In Death Wears A Golden Cloak she tackles a chilling pattern of brides laid out dead on a church altar, dressed in wedding gowns and clutching out of season cornflowers, while an ultra nationalist politician seizes on the case to stir up division. See the Dead Birds Fly pits her against a serial killer who leaves victims remade into bizarre artworks, forcing Stella to confront her own history as a vigilante and the internal affairs boss who suspects she is hiding something. Playing the Devil’s Music brings back infamous serial killer Ulrik Ahlgren, the “Brain Surgeon”, from a maximum security bunker as a possible key to a new wave of ritualistic murders tied to biker gangs and the Swedish death metal scene.

Across the series the tension lies not only in the crimes but in Stella’s ongoing battle with herself. She is brilliant, driven and sometimes terrifying, moving between official investigations and the shadow of the blood she has already spilled, always aware that the line between justice and revenge is much thinner than it looks on paper.
