G.O.D. Inc. Books in Order

G.O.D. Inc. is one of Chalker's stranger hybrids, a private-eye story built on a multiverse machine. The series takes detective fiction, alternate histories, and corporate conspiracy, then jams them together hard enough that the seams become part of the fun.

Sam and Brandy Horowitz are the pair at the center. They are private investigators, married, sharp, and used to taking cases one mess at a time. Then they get pulled toward the Labyrinth, a system of near-infinite alternate Earths run, exploited, or at least managed by the outfit called G.O.D. Inc. Once that door opens, even a normal missing-person or smuggling case can spill into a world where history forked centuries ago.

That setup lets Chalker do two things at once. He gets the hardboiled pleasures of clues, crooks, pursuit, and double-crosses, and he gets the speculative thrill of moving sideways into worlds that are almost familiar but never safe. One version of Earth might differ by politics, biology, or a single old choice. Another might have drifted so far that the rules of everyday life barely match the home world at all.

The Labyrinth of Dreams, The Shadow Dancers, and The Maze in the Mirror build on that instability. The stakes rise from unusual cases to larger attacks on the Labyrinth itself, and the Horowitzes spend more time navigating alternate selves, dangerous substances, and the people who profit from keeping whole realities under control. The detective framework stays useful because it gives the chaos a human scale.

The series is also one of Chalker's most playful takes on identity.

In a setting where other versions of you may exist a page away, personality stops feeling fixed. That idea sits right at the center of the books.
