That captain is Nathan Brazil. At first he looks like a practical spacefaring lead, the sort of man who can handle cargo, trouble, and a few questionable passengers. Then a distress call and a hidden gateway push him onto the Well World, where his companions are transformed into alien forms and the scale of the story suddenly explodes. The planet is not just strange. It is tied to the basic machinery of the universe.

From there the books widen through recurring arcs rather than a simple straight line. Midnight at the Well of Souls stands neatly on its own. Exiles at the Well of Souls and Quest for the Well of Souls turn the setting into a war for power, memory, and access to the Well, with Mavra Chang becoming one of the series' most important players. The Return of Nathan Brazil and Twilight at the Well of Souls push the stakes all the way out to the repair or loss of reality itself.

Then, after a long gap, Chalker came back with The Sea is Full of Stars and Ghost of the Well of Souls. Those later books revisit the setting with fresh angles and new trouble, but they still depend on the same core pleasures, travel across impossible ecologies, characters trying to stay themselves after radical change, and the sense that one wrong move near the Well could alter everything.
