Nathaniel, later Nate, gives the series one of Lovett's steadier romantic threads, though he arrives with questions of his own. Anna is the kind of sleuth who feels capable without being flashy. She is observant, stubborn, and very rooted in her community, which makes the books easy to sink into.

There is also a slightly more bittersweet undercurrent here than in some of Lovett's other series. Anna's new life was shaped by losses as well as choices, and that gives the books a touch of emotional depth beneath the cozy surface. The cases still stand alone, but her personal story keeps moving in ways that matter.
