Series background & context

Firefly Junction starts with Sunni Taylor hitting reset. Her writing career is wobbly, her personal life is a mess, and she heads to the small town of Firefly Junction to be closer to her sisters, Lana and Emily. She takes on a job at the local paper and pours her real energy into restoring Cider Ridge Inn, a rambling old property she hopes to turn into a bed and breakfast. It should be a fresh start.

Instead, it becomes a murder magnet.

The hook that sets this series apart is the paranormal element. Cider Ridge Inn comes with a resident ghost, Edward Beckett, a two-hundred-year-old presence who is proud, meddlesome, and far more entertaining than terrifying. He is not there to make the books scary. He is there to complicate Sunni's life, deepen the town's backstory, and give the series a playful supernatural edge. If you like your cozies with a little haunting but without horror, this is very much that lane.

Sunni is also never far from Detective Brady Jackson. Their chemistry is a big part of the series, and so is the push and pull between Sunni's curiosity and Jackson's very reasonable wish that she would stop throwing herself into danger. Because Sunni works as a reporter, she has a built-in reason to be everywhere she should not be. Parades, craft fairs, pumpkin patches, hotel anniversaries, movie nights, chocolate festivals, and Sweetheart Balls all become possible crime scenes the moment she gets assigned the story.

That setup gives Firefly Junction a nice rhythm. Every book has its own murder to solve, but the series keeps moving on a personal level too. Sunni's inn renovation slowly takes shape. Her family life keeps expanding and tangling. Her romance with Jackson develops over time. And Edward's past, especially the story connected to Kathy Garfield, gives the books a second layer that stretches beyond the immediate case. Figgy Pudding Disaster leans fully into that older thread by stepping back into Firefly Junction in 1815.

The town matters here just as much as the mysteries. Firefly Junction feels festive, a little quirky, and deeply tied to its own local history. Even when the books dip into ghosts, legends, or haunted hotels, the tone stays warm and grounded. The murders may be serious, but the reading experience is cozy, lively, and often funny.

If Port Danby is London Lovett's straight-ahead coastal cozy, Firefly Junction is the series for readers who want that same small-town comfort with a little extra sparkle. Start with Death in the Park and you get the whole package right away: sisters, a fixer-upper inn, a handsome detective, a smug ghost, and a heroine who cannot resist chasing the truth.
