Series background & context
Frostbound Court is a romantasy trilogy set in a Winter Court where love is as dangerous as any weapon. It opens with Everly Elarion, a half fae outcast with a notorious bloodline, who has spent her life surviving in the shadows of powerful men.
In Fated to the Frost King, Everly is named as the fated mate of Draven Ashwynter, the Frostgrave King. Draven rules a kingdom teetering on the edge of ruin, his heart as frozen as the land he protects. The court's seer promises that bonding with his equal will save them all, but instead of the noble match he expects, he gets Everly, illegitimate, defiant, and the last person who wants to kneel at his feet.
Their arranged marriage forces them into close quarters and even closer scrutiny. Old magics stir under the ice, monsters press at the borders, and political enemies circle, eager to use Everly's past against them both. What begins as a cold alliance of necessity slowly shifts as respect, attraction, and shared fury at their circumstances start to melt the walls between them.
Bound to the Shadow Queen rips that fragile safety away. Stolen into the Unseelie Wilds, Everly is confronted with whispers about her true heritage and a queen who would happily reshape the world with her blood. Draven, left behind with a fracturing court and ancient beasts at his gates, tears across hostile territory to find her, even as he wonders whether she will be his salvation or his downfall.
The final volume, Cursed to the Ruined Court, pushes both of them to their limits as ice and shadow spread across the realm. A queen despised by many of her own people and a king fighting an impossible war have to decide whether the bond between them is worth the kingdoms they might lose. The story leans into sacrifice, trust, and the idea that love can be both a weakness and a weapon.
Across all three books you will find the hallmarks of Robin D Mahle and Elle Madison's work, from knife sharp banter and stubborn heroines to sprawling court intrigue and found family. The tone is a little darker and steamier than some of their earlier series, but the emotional through line remains the same, two people who were never meant to be together choosing each other anyway, no matter what their world throws at them.
While the trilogy sits comfortably alongside the Lochlann and Forgotten Kingdoms stories, it stands alone, so you can step into Frostbound first if icy fae courts and enemies to lovers tension are what you are craving.
