Series background & context
Fortress Security: Artemis is a spin off that asks what happens when the covert world around Fortress builds a team of women who are every bit as lethal as their male counterparts. The Artemis operatives are shooters, medics, infiltrators, and strategists, carrying their own scars and secrets into missions that could topple governments or save countless lives.
The series opens with Covert Mission. Seth Dixon, a second generation cop, is brutally attacked and framed for killing his confidential informant. To clear his name and stop a domestic militia bent on assassination, he goes undercover. His partner is Teagan Paloni, a Fortress operative and member of the Artemis team, whose own past refuses to stay buried. Their mission blends small town danger, federal stakes, and a slow building trust between two people who are used to handling problems alone.
In Montana Manhunt, the focus shifts to Violet Trevelyan, the team’s medic, who returns home after heartbreaking loss to hunt a serial killer. She is determined to bring justice to victims the system has failed. Fortress operative Noah Mann insists on going with her, and their pursuit of a murderer turning Violet’s hometown into a hunting ground forces both of them to weigh what they are willing to risk for each other.
Fatal Intent and later titles keep the stakes high, tying Artemis operations to assassins, conspiracies, and enemies drawn from earlier Fortress books. The women of Artemis are not sidekicks. They plan ops, go undercover, kick in doors, and make the kind of calls only someone who has lived in the dark can make. The men in their lives are partners rather than rescuers, bringing their own strengths to a shared fight.
Because Artemis is tied directly to Fortress Security, readers see familiar faces from the main series working alongside the new team. Some operatives move between units, and cases often spill across series lines. This keeps the larger universe feeling cohesive while letting Artemis books highlight a slightly different flavor of story, with more focus on women navigating the cost of operating in a world that expects them to be either invisible or invulnerable.
Like the rest of Rebecca Deel’s work, the Artemis novels deliver fast paced, "clean" romantic suspense. There is plenty of action, but also room for quiet scenes where characters talk about grief, guilt, faith, and the future they hope to build once the mission ends. If you are drawn to stories about female operatives who can hold their own in a firefight and still wrestle honestly with their pasts, this series is a natural next step after Fortress Security.
