The Forge of God

by Greg Bear

1987

A new cinder cone in Death Valley and other impossible geological events signal that Earth is no longer in control of its own fate. Bear builds the dread slowly, then lets the scale of the disaster hit all at once.

2

Anvil of Stars

by Greg Bear

1992

A group of young survivors from ruined Earth are sent into deep space on a mission of revenge against the species that destroyed their home. The sequel asks whether justice can survive when grief is handed planet-killing power.

Series background & context

The Forge of God books make a strong two-book arc. The first novel begins quietly, with impossible geological events, strange objects, and a growing sense that something is deeply wrong with the planet itself. Bear takes his time letting the dread build, and that slow accumulation is a big part of why The Forge of God hits so hard.

It is an apocalypse novel, but not a noisy one at first.

What makes the pair memorable is the shift into Anvil of Stars. After the first book's catastrophe, the sequel follows young survivors who are taken into deep space and given a chance at revenge. That turns the series from a story about helplessness into a story about justice, retaliation, and whether traumatized people can be trusted with civilization-level weapons.

So the two books speak to each other in a useful way. One is about the discovery that Earth is not safe. The other is about what damaged humans do when they are finally handed power. Bear keeps the science-fiction scale enormous, but the real engine is moral pressure.

This page helps keep the reading order simple and shows why the books belong together. If you like your science fiction full of dread, hard choices, and consequences that do not shrink to fit the individual, this series is one of Bear's strongest.
