1

Eon

by Greg Bear

1984

On the brink of nuclear war, humanity discovers a vast stone in Earth orbit, hollow inside and filled with the ruins of a future human civilization. What begins as first contact becomes a story about history, catastrophe, and the multiverse.

2

Eternity

by Greg Bear

1988

Decades after Eon, the Way has been severed and Earth has changed, but factions still want the multiverse reopened. Rhita Vaskayza and a resurrected Konrad Korzenowski are pulled into another crisis with even bigger consequences.

3

Legacy

by Greg Bear

1994

Sent through the Way to the alien world of Lamarckia, Olmy Ap Sennon must investigate an illegal human colony and the damage it may be causing. The prequel adds intimacy and moral weight to the giant architecture of the Eon universe.

Series background & context

The Eon sequence, sometimes grouped under the broader name The Way, is Greg Bear at full big-idea scale. It begins with the appearance of a vast stone in Earth orbit just as nuclear tensions are peaking. Scientists and governments scramble to understand it, and inside they find Thistledown, the remains of a human civilization that seems to come from somewhere outside the usual boundaries of time and space.

That is only the beginning.

Eon starts as a Cold War mystery and then keeps opening outward. The deeper the characters go into the Stone, the stranger the stakes become, until the series is dealing with parallel histories, immense engineered spaces, and the Way itself, a corridor that links worlds and possibilities on a scale human politics can barely manage.

Eternity takes that opening and widens it even further, while Legacy works as a prequel, showing more of the society that grew around the Way and the kinds of compromises required to live inside such an enormous system. These are not cozy puzzle books. They are books of awe, displacement, and dizzying expansion.

This page helps because the internal chronology and publication order are not exactly the same, and because readers often want to know where the prequel fits. If you want Greg Bear at his most ambitious, this is one of the clearest places to look.
