Flora Hyde-Clare Mysteries Books in Order

The Flora Hyde-Clare books spin out of the Beatrice Hyde-Clare world, but they have their own rhythm. Where Beatrice is cautious, observant, and forever surprised to find herself in the middle of trouble, Flora is much more likely to stride toward danger convinced that this is exactly the sort of thing that happens to heroines. She is Bea's cousin, and she has clearly decided that if murder is going to intrude on the family circle, she might as well take an active role.

That confidence is part of the joke, and part of the fun.

In A Boldly Daring Scheme, Flora takes up the question of whether the death of Theodore Davies, once tied to Bea's past, was truly an accident. Bea thinks the matter is straightforward. Flora does not. She sees evasions, hidden motives, and the possibility of a much larger plot, and once that idea gets hold of her she cannot leave it alone. The book sets the tone for the series nicely. Flora is brave, imaginative, impulsive, and more than a little theatrical, but she is not foolish. Her instincts are real even when her methods are risky.

The second book, A Highly Courageous Adventure, pushes her into even more uncomfortable territory by placing her at her beau Sebastian Holcroft's ancestral home. Flora wants to make a good impression, but family visits in these books are never just family visits. Awkward parents, disapproving relatives, household politics, and a murdered land steward quickly turn the stay into another test of nerve and judgment. Flora has to sort out who is lying, who is protecting whom, and how much damage the truth might do.

What makes this series work is the contrast between Flora's self-image and the actual work of investigating. She would very much like to be the sort of heroine who charges through a plot with style and certainty. Instead, she has to learn patience, timing, and how often real danger is messy rather than dramatic. That gives the books a nice comic edge. Flora wants the storybook version of courage, but she keeps running into the more awkward everyday version, the kind that makes you continue asking questions when everyone around you wants you to stop.

The setting matters too. These are still Regency mysteries, full of drawing rooms, carriage rides, dinners, whispered scandals, and country-house tensions, but Flora's books lean even more into family discomfort and emotional embarrassment. She has to manage romance and detection at the same time, and sometimes one threatens the other.

They are closely tied to the Beatrice books, especially in the first installment, so the series reads best if you already know something about Bea and Kesgrave. Still, Flora quickly proves she is not just visiting someone else's story. She brings a different kind of energy to the same universe, one that is brighter, more impulsive, and often wonderfully convinced that a sensible plan can be improvised on the spot.

If Beatrice is the accidental sleuth, Flora is the volunteer. That distinction gives these books their spark.
