Author bio
Catherine Ryan Hyde grew up around Buffalo, New York, and spent part of her youth in New York City. Those places stayed with her. You can feel them in the city streets, small towns, and restless travelers who keep showing up in her fiction.
A high school English teacher named Lenny Horowitz changed her life.
Hyde has said he helped her fall in love with reading again and told her she could write. After graduating at seventeen, she tried a string of jobs, including dog training, bakery work, and giving tours at Hearst Castle. In the early 1980s she decided to take writing seriously, and the beginning was not glamorous. Short stories came first, along with a long stretch of rejection slips. Hyde has spoken openly about piling up more than a hundred rejections before her first real break, which helps explain why her advice to writers tends to be practical rather than dreamy.
She kept going. By the time her work began appearing in literary magazines, she had already learned the part many writers try not to talk about, that persistence matters almost as much as talent. Her first published novel was Funerals for Horses, but Pay It Forward was the book that changed everything. Published in 1999, it became a bestseller, was adapted for film in 2000, and helped turn a simple phrase into part of everyday language. The idea for that novel grew out of a real moment when strangers helped her after car trouble and disappeared before she could repay them.
That success never pulled her away from the kinds of stories she likes to tell.
Again and again, Hyde writes about people who are lonely, bruised, grieving, broke, left behind, or all of the above, then asks what happens when kindness interrupts the story. In books like When I Found You, Take Me with You, and Have You Seen Luis Velez?, she pairs adults and children, strangers and neighbors, and lets them build surprising forms of family. Readers come to her for warmth, but also for the plainspoken way she handles loss, addiction, abuse, prejudice, and recovery. She likes moral crossroads, but she writes them in a way that feels close to daily life rather than symbolic.
She has also written some of her most direct and affecting work for young adult readers. Becoming Chloe follows two abandoned teens trying to stay alive and keep moving. The Year of My Miraculous Reappearance looks at alcoholism and survival through a teenage girl's voice. Jumpstart the World takes on identity, loneliness, and compassion with unusual tenderness. Even when the subject matter is hard, Hyde's books usually leave a little light on.
Animals matter in her work, too. Dogs, horses, and the natural world are not decorative extras in these novels. They are often part of how people find safety, honesty, or a way back to themselves. Her stories also love motion, road trips, long walks, wilderness routes, chance encounters, and the feeling that a life can change because someone stopped, listened, or opened a door.
Hyde has lived in Cambria, California, for decades, and photography is a big part of her life there. She shares images of wildlife, landscapes, skies, and the animals around her, and that visual attention shows up in her writing. She has written about her dogs, her cat, and her horse, and she has turned some of that affection into books as well. She has also done public speaking and still keeps a direct line to readers.
She still seems most interested in ordinary people doing one brave, decent thing at a time.
