Author bio
Lynn Messina grew up on Long Island, New York, and her route into fiction started the way a lot of good writing lives do, with reading, editing, and paying close attention to how people talk. As a kid she delivered newspapers, and in high school she worked on both the yearbook and the school paper. The habit stuck. She became someone who noticed language, social codes, and the funny little performances people put on for each other.
She studied English literature and women's studies at Washington University in St. Louis, and spent her junior year at King's College London. After college she moved to Manhattan and worked as an editorial assistant, including jobs at Avalon Books and the Museum of Television and Radio. Later she freelanced as a copyeditor for magazines, work that kept her close to words while giving her room to write fiction of her own.
That magazine world mattered.
Her debut novel, Fashionistas, drew on that scene with a sharp, funny look at assistants, editors, ambition, and bad office behavior inside a glossy fashion magazine. It gave Messina an early breakout and showed the kind of story she does especially well, smart women trying to keep their balance inside absurd social systems. She followed it with books like Tallulaland and Mim Warner's Lost Her Cool, both contemporary comedies about work, identity, and the mess people make when they are trying to reinvent themselves.
She did not stay in one lane. Messina also wrote young adult fiction, including Savvy Girl and Violet Venom's Rules for Life, where internships, art, magazines, and teen ambition all get stirred together. Then there are the playful paranormal riffs, Little Vampire Women, The Girls' Guide to Dating Zombies, and Love in the Time of Zombies, which show how easily she can move from straight comedy to affectionate literary parody and offbeat apocalypse.
Then she found Regency England.
That turn produced some of her most loved books. In the Love Takes Root romances, beginning with The Harlow Hoyden, she writes spirited heroines, social chaos, and love stories full of teasing dialogue and elaborate schemes. In the Beatrice Hyde-Clare mysteries, which start with A Brazen Curiosity, she blends cozy murder plots with a very funny romance between an overlooked spinster and the Duke of Kesgrave. Later, with A Lark’s Tale, she opened up the same world from a different angle through Verity Lark, a gossip columnist and master of disguise who moves through Regency London with much sharper elbows.
What ties all these books together is not genre so much as attitude. Messina likes clever women, hidden motives, mistaken assumptions, and characters who are underestimated right up until the moment they take over the story. Her books are often full of banter, secret plans, false identities, and people learning that the role society assigned them is not the only one available.
Underestimate her heroines at your peril.
Alongside the novels, Messina has published essays in Self, American Baby, and the Modern Love column in The New York Times. She lives in New York City with her sons, and her career has ended up looking a lot like her fiction, observant, restless, funny, and interested in what happens when smart people decide not to stay in the box prepared for them.
