Series background & context
The Flame in the Mist series shifts Renée Ahdieh's storytelling to an alternate version of feudal Japan, where masked bandits haunt enchanted forests and court alliances are as dangerous as any blade. At its center is Hattori Mariko, the inventive daughter of a powerful samurai family.
In Flame in the Mist, Mariko is being sent to the imperial city to marry Prince Raiden, a match that would bind her family closer to the throne. On the road, her convoy is ambushed and left for dead, and everyone assumes the notorious Black Clan is responsible. Mariko survives by slipping into the shadows, cutting her hair, and disguising herself as a boy so she can infiltrate the clan and find out who truly wanted her dead.
Inside the Black Clan she meets Ōkami, the clan's fierce and observant fighter, and Ranmaru, its charismatic leader. What she finds is not a band of simple thieves, but a group of outcasts and rebels hiding in the haunted Jukai forest, where spirits and strange magic still linger. As Mariko earns their trust, she starts to question the stories she has been told about loyalty, honor, and the emperor's rule.
Outside the forest, her brother Kenshin, a famed samurai, is torn between his duty to rescue his sister and his confusion over the rumors that she might have joined the very outlaws he hunts. At court, politics twist tighter around the emperor, Prince Raiden, and those who stand to gain or lose power if Mariko's survival comes to light. Old secrets about Mariko's birth and Ōkami's past slowly surface, tying their fates together.
Smoke in the Sun, the second novel, leaves the forest for the golden cage of Heian Castle. Mariko returns to the capital outwardly obedient, playing the role of dutiful bride to Raiden while secretly spying for the Black Clan and seeking a way to free Ōkami. The palace is full of rival factions, hidden sorcery, and personal vendettas, and Mariko has to decide how far she is willing to go to change a corrupt system from within.
Two short digital stories, Ōkami and Yumi, expand the saga. Ōkami follows the rebel leader in the wake of his capture, tracing his memories and the choices that led him to sacrifice himself for his friends. Yumi centers on a noblewoman and archer who is tired of living as a sheltered ornament and is ready to strike her own blow against the forces that keep her caged.
Together, the duology and its novellas create a world of smoky forests, shogun level intrigue, and slow burn romance. Readers can expect masked warriors, arranged marriages, and questions about who gets to write the story of a young woman's life.
