Fia McKee brings a different kind of energy to Sasscer Hill's racing fiction. She is older than Nikki Latrelle, already shaped by police work, and much more willing to stride straight into danger. When Flamingo Road opens, Fia is a Baltimore cop on leave after using too much force. Her second chance comes in the form of undercover work in the horse-racing world, where suspicious wins, disappearing horses, and bad money tend to travel together.

She is not in this world for the glamour.

The series drops Fia into racetracks that feel busy, sweaty, and vulnerable. In Florida she works around Gulfstream Park, trying to uncover why certain horses are performing far above expectations while a brutal sideline trade in horse meat threatens the people around her family. In The Dark Side of Town, the action shifts to Saratoga, where a trainer's suspicious success leads Fia toward race-day drugs, mob influence, and money people who are far too comfortable treating both horses and humans as pieces on a board.

Fia's family history gives the books extra weight. Hill has described her as a woman still marked by the murder of her father and by the mother who left the family when Fia was a teenager. She is competent, angry, and protective, which makes sense once you know where she comes from. The books also keep her tied to her brother Patrick and niece Jilly, so even when the plots turn into undercover operations, they never feel detached or purely procedural.

Tone-wise, these are crime thrillers first and cozy mysteries never. There is attraction, there are sharp emotional collisions, and there is plenty of horse knowledge, but the real engine is suspense. Fia has to work inside barns, watch what people do with horses, and decide whom to trust while staying alert to violence that can arrive fast. Hill uses the racing setting well because it is full of money, secrecy, and people who reinvent themselves to stay one step ahead.

If the Nikki Latrelle books are about a young woman trying to make a place for herself in racing, the Fia McKee books are about a grown woman using experience, anger, and nerve to dig under the surface. Flamingo Road and The Dark Side of Town both deliver that mix of trackside authenticity and hard-edged suspense. Expect undercover work, family pressure, and a heroine who keeps pushing long after common sense says back off.
