Biscuit McKee Mystery Books in Order

Biscuit McKee is the librarian in Martinsville, a small town in northern Georgia, and these books are built on the idea that quiet places are never as quiet as they look. The series opens with Orange as Marmalade, when Biscuit and the orange and white library cat, Marmalade, find a body in the library. From there, Fran Stewart keeps returning to the same town, the same relationships, and the same question: what really goes on beneath the calm surface of a close-knit community?

One of the pleasures of the series is the setting. Martinsville sits tucked away in a Georgia valley near the Metoochie River, and the town feels small enough for gossip to travel fast and old grudges to stay alive for years. Biscuit is curious without being flashy, and her marriage to town cop Bob Sheffield gives the books a nice balance between amateur snooping and official investigation. Around them are neighbors, relatives, and recurring townspeople who make the place feel lived in rather than simply arranged for a puzzle.

The early books work as cozies, but they are not feather-light. Yellow as Legal Pads starts with a poisoning on Biscuit's honeymoon. Green As a Garden Hose turns a day outdoors into a deadly tangle of mistaken identity and buried secrets. Blue as Blue Jeans brings flooding and a body in river wreckage, while Indigo as an Iris leans harder into family strain, depression, misunderstanding, and a kidnapping gone wrong. Stewart likes a whodunit, but she also cares about what fear, grief, and long memory do to ordinary lives.

That gives the series a warmer, more human feel than a clue-only mystery.

By the later books, the story grows larger. Violet as an Amethyst and Gray as Ashes keep the danger close, with missing people, fire, and direct threats to Biscuit herself. Then the final four books, Red as a Rooster, Black as Soot, Pink as a Peony, and White as Ice, become one linked saga. An ice storm traps people together, the founding history of Martinsville starts to matter in a bigger way, and long-buried betrayals reach into the present. Those last four are best read in order, because they build toward one long payoff.

So what should you expect overall? A small-town mystery series with a librarian at the center, a talkative cat the humans never quite understand, and cases that blend gossip, danger, family history, and a fair amount of heart. The books reward readers who like returning to the same streets and seeing how one case changes the next. If that sounds good, Biscuit McKee is an easy series to settle into.
