Blood in the Bayou

by CM Sutter

2021

On her first assignment as a senior FBI agent, Jade Monroe and partner Lorenzo DeLeon investigate human bones found deep in Louisiana bayou country. Distrustful locals and a too helpful hunter complicate the case as Jade learns she might be the one being hunted.

Series background & context

The FBI Agent Jade Monroe: Live or Die series picks up after Jade has already proved herself as a small town detective and as a frontline FBI agent. Now promoted to Senior Special Agent in the Bureau's Serial Crimes Unit, she is sent wherever the worst offenders are at work, often with little warning and less backup than she would like.

The opening book, Blood in the Bayou, sends Jade and her new partner, Lorenzo DeLeon, deep into southern Louisiana. Human bones have been found at multiple remote sites in bayou country, and locals are not eager to have federal agents tramping across their land. Jade recruits a local hunter as a go between, hoping he can help her read the swamp and its people. As the investigation drags them through isolated waterways and closed ranks, she begins to question whether their helpful guide has his own reasons for staying close to the case.

Subsequent novels push Jade into other corners of the country, following trails of bodies, missing persons, and killers who seem to delight in remote, difficult terrain. The "Live or Die" tag on the series is more than a marketing line. These are investigations where victims are often held for a time, where deadlines are tight, and where Jade and Lorenzo must decide how much risk they can take in order to possibly save one more person.

Sutter lets Jade carry the experience from earlier books into this new role. She still thinks like the county sergeant from North Bend, looking for local politics and personal grudges beneath each crime. At the same time, she is now forced to navigate Bureau hierarchy, work with unfamiliar field offices, and deal with the glare that comes when federal cases hit national news.

The partnership with Lorenzo adds a new dynamic. He brings his own skills and history to the team, and the series spends time on the trust they have to build while racing from one violent scene to the next. Some cases test their instincts about who to believe in small communities that resent outside interference. Others test their ability to manage interagency cooperation when local law enforcement feels pushed aside.

Across the Live or Die books, readers can expect detailed investigative work, tense confrontations in hostile settings, and a constant undercurrent of urgency. Jade has grown from a local detective into a federal agent whose choices can affect multiple jurisdictions at once. This series shows what that promotion really looks like on the ground, as she balances gut level empathy for victims with the hard edges of federal procedure and politics.
