Series background & context
The Detective Jade Monroe series is where CM Sutter's interconnected crime world begins. Set in and around the fictional town of North Bend, Wisconsin, these novels introduce Jade as a newly promoted sergeant and later detective in the Washburn County Sheriff's Office. Her cases are brutal, her opponents are clever, and her determination to protect her community sets the tone for everything that follows.
The first book, Maniacal, opens with North Bend jolted awake by the discovery of a nearly decapitated body at a local lake. Murder simply does not happen there, or so people think. Jade and her partner, Detective Jack Steele, take the lead on the case, but as more bodies surface, one chilling connection emerges: every victim is linked back to Jade in some way. The investigation becomes a race not only to stop a killer, but to keep Jade's loved ones from becoming targets.
In Captive, a young woman's body is found wrapped in plastic and dumped in a roadside ditch. The condition of the body suggests she was held prisoner before her death. When additional local women disappear, fear runs through the county. Jade and her team work around the clock, trying to figure out who is taking women and where they are being held, knowing that each day without answers lowers the chances of finding anyone alive.
Fallacy raises the stakes with a taunting letter that promises violence against the "vile" residents of Washburn County. The writer hints at impending atrocities but leaves no useful evidence behind. When the first body is found and the brutality matches the threat, the media dubs the killer the North Bend Carver. As the murders grow more depraved, Jade realizes she may have to place herself directly in the killer's path to draw him out.
By Premonition, the series has widened to include local psychic Kate Pierce. Kate is plagued by recurring nightmares of horrific murders and is convinced that a knife obsessed man from her Atlanta past is coming for her. Jade initially struggles with the idea of building a case around visions, but as reports filter in that a violent offender is being released from prison and may be heading their way, she knows she cannot ignore the warning. Protecting Kate may require Jade to take risks that put her own life on the line.
Exposed brings one of the most shocking revelations yet. Darryl Sims, a killer who has been in a maximum security prison for twenty years, loses his family farm to back taxes. When the new owners start construction, they uncover the skeletal remains of long missing women. Darryl's son, Max, goes on the run and resumes the family legacy of violence while his father directs him from behind bars. Jade's pursuit of Max becomes a painful test of her resolve, and the final confrontation forces her to look hard at the toll her career is taking.
Throughout the series, Sutter balances small town familiarity with big city level crime. North Bend may be fictional, but it feels real, with recurring deputies, local business owners, and side characters who react in very human ways to living near violence. These books also lay the groundwork for the broader Monroe Sisters universe, introducing Amber Monroe and Kate Pierce and leading directly into the FBI focused and psychic spin off series.
