Author bio
Faith Blum writes Christian historical fiction that keeps one foot in the past and the other in everyday human problems. Her books move between frontier Westerns, biblical retellings, mysteries, and shorter companion stories, but they share the same plainspoken heart. She grew up in small-town Wisconsin and has said she has been a proud small-town resident her whole life, and that still shapes both her work and the life she writes from in Central Wisconsin with her husband, son, and cat, Smokey.
Small towns never really left her fiction.
She started writing young, long before publication was part of the plan. She has also said that she loves stories because they can teach history in a fun way, which helps explain why so much of her work is rooted in the nineteenth-century West or the world of the Old Testament. History, for Blum, is not there to sit behind glass. It is there to be lived in.
Her first novel, A Mighty Fortress, opened the Hymns of the West series in 2013. That book, and later titles like Be Thou My Vision, Amazing Grace, and The Solid Rock, show what readers often come to her for: frontier danger, family strain, clean romance, and characters who learn that faith is easier to claim than to practice when life gets hard. Even when there are outlaws, wilderness survival, or a Pinkerton investigation in the mix, the emotional stakes stay close to home.
She did not stay in one corner of historical fiction for long. In the Orphans of the West books, including Savior, Like a Shepherd and He Hideth My Soul, she writes about young people carrying more responsibility than they should and slowly finding steadier ground. In Tales of the East, she shifts to biblical settings and fairy-tale echoes, using books like Trust and Obey and Love Lifted Me to explore slavery, family pressure, longing, and trust.
She likes high stakes, but she keeps them human.
Across her catalog, the recurring pieces are easy to spot: isolated communities, hard work, wounded families, people with complicated pasts, and a steady interest in what happens when pride gives way to grace. Even when there are kidnappings, wrongful arrests, or royal households, Blum tends to stay close to the practical details of life, who provides, who feels left out, who is too ashamed to ask for help, who is trying to start over. That is a big part of what gives her books their warmth.
Her shorter work matters too. Novellas like Paul's Skeptical Bride and I Love to Tell the Story let her work with tighter casts and quicker setups, while pieces such as What Child is This and Christ Arose: A Tomb's Tale show her interest in retelling familiar biblical moments from unusual angles. If you like companion stories, she has built plenty of them.
These days, writing is her full-time career. Alongside the books, she describes herself as a wife, mom, author, and entrepreneur. When she is not working, she talks about baking sourdough, cooking for her family's food needs, taking walks with her young son, and playing piano at church. She is also involved with the Author Conservatory.
Faith Blum writes stories that want to entertain, but also steady the reader a little. Whether she is sending a stagecoach into danger, following an orphan toward adulthood, or setting a fairy-tale shape inside ancient Israel, she keeps returning to the same question: what does trust look like when life stops being easy?
