Series background & context

The Ex Hex series, also known as the Graves Glen books, is Erin Sterling's run of witchy romantic comedies about love, magic, and curses that refuse to stay small. The series begins in Graves Glen, Georgia, a town that has turned spooky charm into a business model. Tourists come for Halloween vibes. Locals know the magic is not just decorative.

The first book, The Ex Hex, centers on Vivienne Jones and Rhys Penhallow. Years earlier, Vivi and Rhys had a brief, intense romance that ended badly. Vivi dealt with the heartbreak in a very witchy way, with vodka, bath products, and a curse she did not take seriously. When Rhys comes back to town, the supposed joke curse starts causing real magical damage. The only way forward is for Vivi and Rhys to work together, which is awkward because the attraction is still there.

That is the basic series promise: magic makes avoidance impossible.

The Kiss Curse shifts to Gwyn Jones, Vivi's cousin, who is happy running her life in Graves Glen until Wells Penhallow arrives and opens a rival shop. Their rivalry has teeth, but it also has heat. At the same time, a new group of witches threatens the town's magical balance, giving Gwyn and Wells a reason to keep crossing paths even when pride says they should not.

The Wedding Witch widens the setting to Wales and follows Bowen Penhallow, the quiet brother who studies darker magic, and Tamsyn Bligh, a human dealer in magical objects. Their story begins around a Yuletide wedding at Tywyll House, then gets complicated by a spell that throws them into the past. It keeps the romantic comedy shape but adds a stronger haunted-house and time-slip flavor.

The books work because the magic is tied to relationships. Curses are not random decorations. They come from old hurt, family pressure, secrecy, and longing. Graves Glen itself feels like a character, with shops, festivals, and local witches giving the series its cozy center.

Read them in order if you can: The Ex Hex, then The Kiss Curse, then The Wedding Witch. Each romance stands on its own, but the family dynamics and magical history are easier to enjoy when they unfold naturally.
