Author bio
Rachel Hawkins was born in Newport News, Virginia, and moved to Alabama when she was very young. She grew up in Dothan, went to Houston Academy, and later studied English literature at Auburn University. Books were part of the plan early. Her first story, written in kindergarten, involved a unicorn, a witch, and a princess.
So the signs were there.
After college, Hawkins taught high school English for a few years. While she was teaching, she began the book that became Hex Hall, a funny, fast-moving paranormal YA story about Sophie Mercer, a teenage witch sent to a reform school for magical troublemakers. The book came out in 2010 and grew into a trilogy with Demonglass and Spell Bound, followed by the spin-off School Spirits.
Hawkins kept writing for teens, but she did not stay in one lane for long. Rebel Belle mixed Southern manners, pageant polish, and supernatural bodyguard duty. The Royals books moved into contemporary romance, tabloid chaos, and fictional Scottish royalty. Her younger middle grade novels, including Journey's End and Ruby and Olivia, leaned into friendship, ghosts, and spooky places that are scary without being too grim.
Then came the grown-up thrillers.
With The Wife Upstairs, Hawkins reworked Jane Eyre into a Southern Gothic suspense story set among moneyed Birmingham neighborhoods and old secrets. Reckless Girls took readers to a remote Pacific island where a dream trip starts to rot from the inside. The Villa paired a modern friendship under strain with a 1970s murder in Italy, while The Heiress turned a North Carolina mansion and a famous family fortune into a trap full of questions.
She also writes as Erin Sterling, a pen name she uses for witchy paranormal romantic comedies. Those books, starting with The Ex Hex, are lighter on the body count and heavier on curses, chemistry, and magical small-town trouble.
Across her work, Hawkins tends to come back to sharp narrators, old houses, messy women, family stories that do not add up, and places where charm hides something dangerous. She likes humor, but she also likes a locked door, a storm outside, and a person who is definitely not telling the whole truth.
Hawkins now lives in Auburn, Alabama, with her husband, son, and a houseful of cats. She has written for kids, teens, and adults, and she seems happiest moving between genres, as long as there is a secret waiting in the walls.
