Series background & context

Everlife imagines that the life a person first experiences is only the beginning. After death, a longer existence awaits, and two rival realms compete for people's allegiance. Gena Showalter's young adult trilogy turns that premise into a question about freedom: who should decide where a person belongs? For seventeen-year-old Tenley Lockwood, usually called Ten, refusing to surrender that decision to her parents has already carried a serious cost before the first book begins.

In Firstlife, Ten has spent thirteen months inside Prynne Asylum because she will not accept the future chosen for her. Troika and Myriad, the powers competing in the Everlife, both want her on their side. They send skilled representatives to persuade her, making their interest difficult to distinguish from genuine concern. Ten must decide whom to believe while trying to stay alive long enough to make her own choice. Attraction adds another uncertainty when the realm she prefers may not match the allegiance of someone she cares about.

Her decision will not end the conflict.

Lifeblood follows the consequences of entering the next stage of existence. Learning how her chosen realm works becomes part of Ten's new responsibility, while war between Troika and Myriad continues. She must also take part in efforts to bring living people to her side. The change of role matters: someone who fought to control her own choice now has to consider what it means to influence another person's. The story keeps questions about loyalty and persuasion close to its fantasy action.

The final book, Everlife, expands the danger beyond Ten's individual future. The rivalry between the realms threatens their ability to face a crisis together. Killian Flynn remains important to the emotional and political stakes, and trust becomes a problem that cannot be settled by an official allegiance alone. Bringing enemies toward cooperation requires Ten to look beyond the boundaries that organized the earlier conflict. The trilogy follows one heroine through those changing responsibilities rather than presenting a new central cast in every book.

The setting gives ordinary teenage questions about parents, independence and belonging an unusually lasting scale. A choice made under pressure can affect an existence far beyond the first life, making the competing promises hard to ignore. The tone combines young adult fantasy, romance and conflict between powers that want something from the heroine. Start with Firstlife, continue with Lifeblood and finish with Everlife. The sequence depends on Ten's developing knowledge and relationships, so reading in order preserves both the uncertainty of the first decision and the consequences that follow it.
