Author bio

Esther Hatch grew up on a cherry orchard in rural Utah, in a small community where there was not much television reception. Books filled that gap early. Her mother was a big reader, and Hatch followed right behind her.

After high school, she split her time between Russia, where she taught English to children, and Brigham Young University, where she studied archaeology. That mix of travel, history, and hands-on work fits neatly with the worlds she now writes, full of old houses, social rules, and people trying to build a life inside systems they did not design.

She did not set out with a tidy lifelong plan to become a novelist. A turning point came when she beta read a manuscript for family and realized how much she loved thinking about story on the page. Soon after, she joined a critique group, and the rule was simple, everyone had to bring their own writing.

So she did.

Hatch has joked that peer pressure made her a writer, but she took the work seriously almost at once. Her first finished draft was a YA fantasy, messy by her own account, and the next day she started something new. Wanting a faster project with a strong romantic pull, she turned to historical romance and wrote the book that became The Roses of Feldstone.

That debut helped sketch the shape of her fiction. Readers who pick up The Roses of Feldstone, A Proper Scandal, A Proper Charade, or Manor for Sale, Baron Included will find lively banter, strong heroines, and couples whose goals are pointed in opposite directions. Hatch has said she loves a good scandal because it throws conflict straight at the characters, and she also loves dialogue, which helps explain why her books move with so much conversational energy.

She later moved from Regency into the early Victorian period because it gave her heroes more interesting careers. You can see that in books like A Proper Scandal, where Nate Barton works in the rising railroad industry, and A Proper Scoundrel, where Diana Barton owns multiple railroad lines and tries to use a notorious lord to frighten away fortune hunters. In The Earl’s Hideaway, No Ladies Allowed, a runaway earl and a governess end up hiding out at the same cottage. In If You’ll Have Me, a reunion and a proposal of convenience turn into something deeper.

She likes pressure-cooker setups.

Money and rank rarely line up neatly in her stories. A broke nobleman may need a rich heroine. A proper duke may hide more feeling than the obvious rogue. A woman might step into danger simply because the safe choices have been taken from her. Even when the plots get twisty, the emotional center stays clear: these are books about trust, dignity, attraction, and the awkward work of learning to say what you mean.

Hatch has also written shorter fiction and a contemporary holiday romance, One Small Secret, but the thread that runs through her work is easy to spot. She likes characters who surprise each other, plans that go sideways, and kissing scenes that are heartfelt and a little fun. From orchard kid to archaeology student to novelist, her path into writing feels a lot like one of her own stories, a little unexpected, slightly chaotic, and very easy to root for.
