Series background & context
The Rachel Hatch series is a mystery thriller line with an action-thriller heartbeat. The lead, Rachel Hatch, prefers “Hatch” and lives like a drifter, no home base, no long-term ties, and no patience for people who waste time. That changes the moment she’s forced to go back to the place she walked away from.
In Drift, Hatch returns home to bury her sister and quickly decides the death wasn’t an accident. With her background as an Army criminal investigator, she knows how to work a case and she doesn’t wait around for someone to give her a badge. She teams up with the local sheriff and becomes deputized, then starts pulling on threads that a lot of people would rather keep buried.
Hatch doesn’t do halfway.
From there, the series keeps two tracks moving at once. Each book has its own case and its own set of threats, but there’s also a longer thread about family, grief, and the questions surrounding her father. The stories can shift locations without losing the emotional through-line because Hatch is always chasing the same thing, the truth, even when the truth gets her shot at.
The scope widens quickly. In Downburst, Hatch heads to a small town outside Las Cruces, New Mexico, where a violent street gang controls part of the area and a family is caught in the crossfire. In Fever Burn, the trail takes her to a remote village in Africa ruled by a ruthless warlord, forcing her into a fight her personal code won’t let her walk away from. And in Smoke Signal, Hatch returns to Hawk’s Landing hoping to reconnect with family, but a death on a neighboring reservation pulls Sheriff Dalton Savage into a case that drags her back into the fight.
There are also shorter entries that fill in key moments between the larger novels. Stories like Fractured, Proving Ground, and The Gauntlet lean into training, recovery, and proving she still belongs in elite spaces. They show how much Hatch has already endured, and why she keeps choosing the hard road when an easier one is available.
If you like a tough lead with a stubborn moral streak, fast pacing, and mysteries that turn into full-on survival fights, this series is a good match. Start with Drift and keep going in order. Add the short stories when you want extra context for what Hatch is pushing through.
