The books move quickly, but they also spend time on grief, loyalty, family damage, and the cost of chasing the truth for too long. Erin herself is a big part of the appeal. She is funny, stubborn, bruised, and usually one bad decision away from trouble.

Midnight Lullaby works as a prequel, set earlier in Portland, Maine, and showing the first uneasy partnership between Diggs and a younger Erin Solomon. Some readers like to start there, while others save it until after the main arc is underway. Either way, this is a series for readers who want dark New England atmosphere, an ongoing mystery that keeps widening from book to book, and a heroine who takes everything personally because, in her case, it usually is personal.
