Extraordinary People

by Peter May

2006

Scottish forensic scientist Enzo Macleod accepts a wager to solve seven notorious French cold cases using modern technology. His first challenge is the mysterious disappearance of a brilliant Jacques Brel scholar in the catacombs of Paris ten years ago.

Series background & context

Enzo Macleod is not your typical investigator. For one thing, he isn't actually a detective. He is a biology professor based in Toulouse, a university city in the south of France that serves as his home base. Half-Scottish and half-Italian, he cuts a distinct figure among the locals, bringing a dry wit and a brilliant scientific mind to problems that usually rely on old-fashioned police work. He has left the rainy streets of Scotland behind, but he certainly hasn't left his stubborn streak.

The journey begins with a challenge rather than a crime scene. Enzo gets involved in a high-stakes intellectual wager regarding a notorious book written by a Parisian journalist. The book details several high-profile cold cases that the French police failed to crack over the years. Confident in the power of modern forensic science, Enzo bets that he can solve these mysteries using the latest technology and his own expertise. It starts as a point of professional pride, but it quickly becomes a dangerous obsession.

Unfortunately, proving a point can be a deadly business.

Unlike the police, Enzo doesn’t have a badge or a gun. He relies on evidence that others missed. He applies his academic background to revisit old clues, looking at them through the lens of modern biology and chemistry to find traces that were invisible to investigators decades ago. This scientific approach often rubs the local authorities the wrong way, making him an outsider in more ways than one. He has to navigate French bureaucracy and police politics just as carefully as he handles DNA samples.

As the series progresses, the investigations take Enzo on a vivid tour of his adopted country. Peter May uses these novels to explore the diverse landscapes of France, moving far beyond the tourist hotspots. You might find Enzo crawling through the claustrophobic catacombs beneath Paris in Extraordinary People or investigating a murder among the vineyards of Gaillac in The Critic. Later books take him to the rugged coast of Brittany and the high-stakes world of Michelin-starred cuisine.

The cold cases turn out to be anything but dormant. By digging up the past, Enzo inadvertently alerts killers who believed they were in the clear. The stakes rise with every answer he finds. It isn't just his own life on the line, either. His investigations frequently draw his family into the crossfire, forcing him to balance his drive for the truth with his duty as a father to his daughters.

This combination of forensic puzzle-solving and atmospheric travel makes the Enzo Files a unique entry in crime fiction. It is a story about an intellectual who is forced to become a man of action, using his brain to outwit enemies who are more than willing to use brute force.
