Enzo Books in Order

The Enzo books grow out of The Art of Racing in the Rain, but this branch of Garth Stein's work really runs in two lanes. Racing in the Rain retells the main story for younger readers, while the picture books focus on earlier and smaller adventures with Enzo, Denny, and Zoë. Different ages can enter at different points, but the emotional center stays the same: a smart dog, a close family, and a world that always seems to be moving.

The picture books stay lighter, but they are not throwaways.

Enzo Races in the Rain works as an origin story, showing how Enzo finds the family that fits him. Enzo and the Christmas Tree Hunt! and Enzo's Very Scary Halloween take familiar childhood experiences, snow, getting lost, costumes, neighborhood spookiness, and run them through a puppy mind that feels everything at top speed. Enzo and the Fourth of July Races brings the racing theme forward again as Zoë has to decide whether she is brave enough to compete.

That mix of family life and racing is the series' signature move. Denny loves the track, Zoë grows up around cars and competition, and Enzo thinks motion is almost a philosophy. Speed in these books is exciting, of course, but it also stands for confidence, attention, and the choice to keep going when you are scared. Stein lets the lessons sit inside the adventure instead of stopping to explain them.

These are warm books.

They are also more connected than they first appear. Whether Enzo is learning the way home, facing Halloween fears, helping Zoë at the track, or standing beside Denny through harder seasons, the through line is loyalty.
