Author bio

Peter May has had the kind of career that most writers only dream about. Born in Glasgow in 1951, he knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a novelist. However, like many creative people, he had to figure out a way to pay the bills while he honed his craft.

He decided to pursue journalism, a field that taught him how to write clearly and work under strict deadlines. He was naturally talented at it, and by the time he was just twenty-one years old, he had won the prestigious title of Scotland’s Young Journalist of the Year. It was a fast-paced start to his professional life, but his original dream of writing fiction never went away.

In 1978, he published his first novel, The Reporter. It was a significant milestone. The book was well-received and quickly caught the eye of television executives. The BBC adapted the story into a television drama called The Standard. This experience opened a new door for May, leading him away from the newsroom and into the world of television production.

What followed was a prolific fifteen-year career as a screenwriter and producer. May became a familiar name in the British television industry, working on major primetime dramas such as Squadron and the incredibly popular, long-running series Take the High Road.

One of his most important projects during this time was Machair. May co-created this groundbreaking serial, which was filmed entirely in the Gaelic language. The production took place on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Spending so much time on the island had a profound effect on him. The rugged landscapes and the unique atmosphere of the Hebrides would later serve as the inspiration for his most famous literary works.

In the 1990s, May decided to leave the television industry and return to his first love: writing novels. He didn't take the easy route. He dedicated himself to extensive research, which included travelling to China. These trips formed the backbone of his China Thrillers series, providing an authentic look at the country's culture and police procedures.

Later, he turned his attention to France for the Enzo Files. These books followed the investigations of a forensic expert and showcased May's ability to write compelling mysteries in varied, distinct settings.

However, it was his return to the setting of the Outer Hebrides that truly cemented his international reputation. The Lewis Trilogy, beginning with the standout novel The Blackhouse, brought the brooding, wind-swept landscapes of Scotland to a global audience. These books are widely considered masterpieces of crime fiction, mixing complex character study with the harsh beauty of the islands.

Today, Peter May lives in South-West France with his wife, the writer Janice Hally.

He continues to write at a steady pace, exploring new ideas and settings. His recent work covers a wide range of topics, from crime stories set on the sunny coast of Spain to thrillers set in a near-future, climate-ravaged Scotland. Even after decades of success, he remains a storyteller at heart, constantly finding new ways to keep his readers on the edge of their seats.
