Author bio
Emma Tallon is a British crime writer from London whose novels dive into the clubs, estates and backrooms of the city’s underworld. She writes stories about loyalty, power and the people who live in the shadow of both.
As a child she read widely and treated books as a way out of ordinary life. Before long she was filling notebooks with her own scenes and characters, teaching herself how stories worked sentence by sentence.
In adulthood she didn’t step straight into publishing. A friend pointed her toward online freelance work when she needed extra income, and she stumbled into a ghostwriting job almost by accident. More offers followed, and soon she was writing full time for other people.
Ghostwriting paid the bills and sharpened her craft. She learned how to plot quickly, build tension and hit deadlines, even if her name never appeared on a cover. For years she was happy enough working in the background.
That changed when she was pregnant with her first child. Time away from constant client work gave her space to ask what she wanted her son to see when he looked back at her life. Quietly, between feeds and night wakings, she began drafting a crime novel of her own.
That manuscript grew into Runaway Girl, originally told in an earlier edition titled Life Game. She finished it in 2016 and sent it out, collecting months of rejections before a digital-first publisher offered her a contract in December 2017. The deal covered the first three books about East End baron Freddie Tyler and runaway Anna Davis and turned Tallon into a full-time novelist.
Since then she has expanded her London universe. The Tyler Family books follow Anna, Freddie and their friend Tanya as they fight for survival in nightclubs and back alleys from the East End to Soho. The Drew Family series shifts the focus to Scarlet Drew and her formidable aunt Lily, exploring what happens when a woman takes the helm of a long-running firm. The newer Capello Family novels open up another corner of the city, with lawyer-by-day Maria Capello juggling courtrooms, family loyalties and the dangerous pull of the mob.
Across these stories Tallon returns to the same obsessions: fiercely protective families, the cost of revenge, and women who learn to wield power in worlds that were never built for them. Her books balance car chases and shoot-outs with kitchen-table arguments, small acts of kindness and the quiet dread of knowing past mistakes are catching up.
More recently she has stepped outside pure gangland fiction with novels like Snow Going Back, which leans into romantic comedy while keeping her usual focus on messy relationships and second chances. Even away from the underworld, she is still writing about people trying to rewrite the stories they were born into.
Tallon now lives in Milton Keynes with her two children and writes from a home office surrounded by tottering piles of books and colour-coded notes. She often works late into the night, chasing one more scene, and she stays close to readers through events and social media, where she shares glimpses of drafts, family life and the next twist she’s plotting.
